„Dear Mathias,
Greetings from St. Rupert Mayer, I hope you are protected from this Covid 19 pandemic which has left the world in panic. In Makonde we are doing our best to make ends meet, the economy is quite depressive and unpredictable. I am very impressed with your initiative and we appreciate the effort you are putting towards building the science laboratory at St Rupert. I am going to meet Mr. Chivhanga is that I can give him the plan, it has been difficult to move because of government restrictions.
The informal trade is at halt and it is unfortunate that a disproportional number of our parents are in the informal business. I am sure you know about the economic hardships that we are facing as a country, so it is difficult for the parents to raise school fees for their children. Most of our leaners here come from separated families, child headed families and elderly parents. It is very difficult for them to raise school fees for their children. For the past few years, we have not been receiving enough rainfall here in Makonde, so people are focusing on buying food for consumption other than sending their children to school. Because of this we are having a number of children who are dropping out.
Children are ending up practicing illegal gold panning at the nearby river as a way of raising money to pay for their school fees. Considering the welfare of our children, this is a very risk activity but they have no choice. At some point of time we used to share what we had received from the few who are able to pay the fees, with those vulnerable learners. Most of the affected learners have potential which can be realized in the near future if they get the assistance. Some are very intelligent.
Our school fees is not that much, Day scholars are paying equivalent of 20 US dollars while the boarding scholars are paying equivalent of 200 US dollars. Of course USD is no longer a legal tender here in Zimbabwe but it is still being accepted by other financial institutions. It will be great if we can find more scholarships to boost our school and assist these vulnerable children. Financial support is needed in deed.
Warm regards,
Clemence“
Vielen Dank!
